LETTER PERFECT (Book #1)
Cathy Marie Hake

This is an older book that was a free download, which I am so glad I read! The characters were fun and flawed. I love how God is on people’s hearts and lips frequently, but not in an overbearing way. More like He is just a normal, flowing part of their lives, as it should be. I did not see the big twists coming, and once revealed just get deeper and deeper into a massive knot of ugly! I laughed at times, and cried at times, and genuinely enjoyed myself. There is determination, hard work, western theme set in CA when the railroad was growing, and war just around the bend…but, thankfully not in this book. There’s a general store, and neighbors helping neighbors, and sweet building romance. There is also greed and some mystery. The ending is settled, so you can read it as a stand-alone if you choose to.
A new favorite quote of mine from this book is, “If there’s going to be a banquet table in Paradise, I don’t see why there can’t be a tea table, too.”

I give it 5 out of 5 stars and would recommend it to others.

It is 1859 and Ruth Caldwell is being sent home to St. Louis from yet another finishing school. Ruth, described as a misfit, is unique for ladies of her day. She tries so hard but tends to be accident prone and has a way of putting her foot in her mouth on a regular basis. She has a very bright mind and likes to use it. She has no intention of letting men have all the say! Upon returning home though, she realizes how sick her mother actually is and regrets not having come home earlier. For the next six months, Ruth rarely leaves her side.

Her mother's dying wish is that Ruth mail a letter via the Pony Express to her father out in California and then go out there. Unbeknown to either of them, her father died two years ago. Josh McCain, 24 is the new owner of Broken P Ranch along with his dad. When Josh receives the letter he does not want her to come. Too late! Here she is!

How embarrassing for Ruth, when she meets Josh off he coach and has a bout of hiccups. This happens quite frequently throughout the story when Ruth gets nervous. Quite amusing. On this first occasion though, Josh assumes she likes her alcohol like her father did. Of course, nothing could be further from the truth! Ruth is a Christian, as is Josh, and she also knows that her mama is now with the Lord.

How will Josh's father react to Ruth's arrival? He has been keeping the books for the ranch but has he been upright? What does the Last Will and Testament say?

There are two main families in this book the McCains (Josh, his sister Laney and their father) and the O'Sullivans who run a Pony Express station. The girls spend many days with the O'Sullivans and I love the wisdom that Mrs. O'Sullivan dishes out.

Love, suspense, deceit and danger are all present in this book. Who is out to get Ruth? Is her life truly in danger?

This is a Christian novel and therefore scriptures and biblical wisdom are strewn throughout. I absolutely LOVED this story. It was fresh, well-written, easy to read and I did not want to put it down. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
Ruth Caldwell had been to finishing school after finishing school, but the head mistresses kept throwing up their hands with her. Apparently she was too accident prone and too apt to get into trouble by trying to help someone to ever become the lady society expected. When she’s kicked out of yet another school, she returns home to find her mother very sick. He mother has her promise to go out west to find the father she’s never seen if something happens to her. When her mother dies, that’s what she does. She gets there to find her father has also passed away, and his partners thought the ranch belonged to them. Can they sort through the confusion without Ruth failing again?

Josh McCain seems to be honest and fair, and he convinces Ruth to stay at the ranch until a judge can decide what should be done and who should inherit it. When accidents start happening, Ruth didn’t think much of it at first, but when they become more dangerous and frequent, she begins to wonder. Does someone want her out of the picture?

I was afraid a bungling Ruth would be too silly and unbelievable, but this turned out to be a cute, well-written story. Some parts went on for too long, but overall I really enjoyed it and found it to be a satisfying read.
Ruth Caldwell is a puzzle. She has been kicked out of one finishing school after another, her natural clumsiness making her a hapless conundrum. When Ruth is sent home again, she is devastated to learn her mother's health is failing. Even more surprising, she learns that her mother has contacted her father, whom Ruth has never met, and asked him to take Ruth in after she passes. When the time comes, Ruth boards the stage and heads off to California for a very unknown future.

Her situation is even more complicated when she arrives to find out that her father has passed away as well. His property is now home to his partner's family. They graciously take Ruth into their home while they try to figure out the inheritance.

A new location hasn't made Ruth any less prone to blunders, but the West does provide fewer expectations and more room to shine just as she is. She befriends a young woman who struggles with reading and is able to help her with tailored lessons, and she catches the eye of two different young men.

Yet not everything is as it seems, and when it becomes apparent that sinister things are happening, Ruth must trust her new friends to help her figure out where the danger lies and how they can keep everyone safe.

This is an older novel, but I enjoyed it tremendously. There were elements of the plot that really took me by surprise, and the main characters had a real emphasis on building one another up through Scripture and prayer. I'll be reading more books by this author in the future!
